Frequently Asked Questions
At Si-Can Engineering, we understand that precision engineering projects often come with detailed requirements, tight tolerances and important technical considerations. Our FAQ section is designed to give you quick, clear answers to the most common questions about our machining capabilities, materials, turnaround times, tolerances, batch sizes, finishes and more. Whether you’re planning a prototype, a one-off part or a small production run, these FAQs will help you better understand how we work and what you can expect when partnering with us.
We’re committed to delivering a transparent, reliable and professional service, and that starts with making sure you have all the information you need.
If your question isn’t answered below — or if you’d like to discuss the specifics of an upcoming project — we’re always happy to help, please get in touch by clicking here.
What services do you offer?
We provide precision CNC milling, CNC turning, grinding, spark erosion (EDM), and a wide range of surface finishing options including anodising, plating, powder coating and protective coatings. We also offer CAD support to help refine or prepare your designs for manufacture.
What file formats do you accept for CAD drawings?
We accept most common CAD formats including STEP, IGES, DXF and DWG. If your files are in a different format, we can often convert them — simply get in touch and we’ll advise the best approach.
Do you produce prototypes and one-off components?
Yes — we regularly manufacture prototypes, single components, jigs, fixtures and small production runs. Our flexible setup allows us to turn around low-volume projects quickly while maintaining exceptional accuracy.
Can you handle small batch production?
Absolutely. We specialise in limited batch runs where consistency, repeatability and tight tolerances are critical. We can also scale production depending on project requirements.
What materials can you machine?
We work with a wide range of materials including aluminium, stainless steel, mild steel, brass, copper, engineering plastics and various specialist alloys. If you’re unsure whether we can work with your chosen material, just ask — we’ll be happy to confirm.
What tolerances can you achieve?
Tolerances vary depending on the material and geometry, but our Hurco CNC machines allow us to work to extremely fine tolerances suitable for high-performance and precision-critical applications. We can review your drawings and advise exact achievable tolerances.
Do you offer surface finishing?
Yes. We provide anodising, powder coating, plating, polishing, bead blasting and a variety of protective surface treatments. These finishes improve durability, appearance and corrosion resistance.
What is your typical turnaround time?
Turnaround time depends on the complexity and quantity of the job. We aim to turn around prototypes and low-volume parts quickly, and we’ll always give you an accurate lead time before production begins.
Can you help refine my design for manufacturability?
Yes — we offer CAD support and can provide advice on material choice, tolerances, geometry and cost-effective manufacturing approaches. This helps ensure your part is both functional and efficient to produce.
Do you offer assembly or post-machining operations?
Where relevant, we can provide additional operations such as tapping, thread milling, countersinking, deburring and part assembly. We can also coordinate specialist external processes through trusted partners.
Do you work with individuals as well as businesses?
Yes. Whether you’re an engineer, hobbyist, designer or a company needing precision parts, we’re happy to support projects of all sizes.
How do I request a quote?
Simply send us your drawings, CAD files or sketches along with material requirements, quantities and any relevant details. We’ll review your project and provide a fast, clear and competitive quotation.
